TN2B06 Patch 02 - Present Perfect 05 & review

REFERENCE
We use the present perfect, not the present simple, to talk about actions or states that started in the past and continue to the present:
I have known her for three years. (Not: I know her for three years.)

We use the present perfect, not the past simple, to talk about:
  • actions or events that happened or started in the past and have a result in the present:
He has washed the dishes = The dishes are clean now.
They have cut the grass. = The garden looks nice now.
  • actions or events that happened at an indefinite time in the past:
I have been to China. (I don't mention when)
She has read a lot of books. (She doesn't say when)

  • We use the past simple, not the present perfect:
  • to talk about actions that finished in the past. Compare:
She lived in London. (She doesn't live in London now.)
She's lived in London for five years. (She lives in London now.)
  • if we say or know when an action or event happened in the past. Compare:
He bought a new bike last weekend.
He has bought a new bike, so he's very excited (now).
